Edit: A quick note as people keep asking me questions about this: This is a quick draft over how I shade my pictures. I didn't explain the exact technique in this one. The tutorial for how to use Gradient to shade will come soon. Additionally I recommend basic photoshop- (or gimp-)skills!!! If you don't know what lasso, gradiation or ambiente-light is, I doubt this will be helpful for you. I wanted this tutorial to show off the possibilities of how to soft-cell-shade in an easy way. But it is only easy if you actually know what is the difference between soft-cell-shading, cg and cellshadeing. Hope that cleared some things ^^
A quick tutorial (if you can even call it that...) about how I speedpaint... which is basically no different to how I paint in general xD For normal paintings I pay a lot more attentions to details though.
Anyway, I hope that answers some questions Gradiation-tool and Eraser for the win!! W00T!
Have fun~
Oh before I forget about it... I use Photoshop CS4, but any other CS-version works too. Gimp or PaintTool SAI shouldn't be a problem as well. Even though I use a tablet, it is possible to color my way with a mouse as well. I use the lasso-tool and gradiation most of the time. This way mouse-users should get a hang on this technique with a little patience as well.
As for the exact technique I'm working with: I'm currently preparing a second tutorial with a focus on how I get my shadings to look as they do in my pics. Just wait a little longer
